On the 28th of November 2014, the students of the first batch of the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture; commenced a visit to Dehiattakandiya after a prolonged period of time, to finally fulfill a promise which was made to the townsfolk of Girandurukotte.

It was as the second phase of the students’ project, based on Community Development Landscape Architecture for the township of Girandurukotte. They presented their design solutions, aspirations and reflections on the area under discussion to the officers and the rest of the governing body of the township.

This project was first introduced on the fourth of April 2014 at the university. After a thorough study other town, starting from the cascade system of Sri Lanka, forty-seven students presented their own design proposals for 3 potential areas selected within the township. One main purpose of this project was to identify the weaknesses in the existing town plan and to come up with solutions. Finally, a few proposals were selected, based on their practicality and the comprehensiveness regarding the condition and the setting of the
location.

This was a special episode for the scholars of Landscape Architecture and also a turning point in Sri Lankan history, as they presented Landscape proposals for a Mahaweli Township; for the first time as a group of undergraduates.

University of Moratuwa was the resource provider for this project and it was consulted by Eng. Landscape Architect Susira Udalamatta, Senior lecturer in the Department of Architecture, University of Moratuwa.
